THE MAHAVISHNU PROJECT March 2nd-8th, 2008

Billy Cobham asked me to be a part of an interesting project involving him, the music of the legendary Mahavishnu orchestra, arranger/conductor Colin Towns and the Adelaide symphony orchestra of Australia. This took me back to my young years since I got interested in jazz music through Billy’s playing in the said Mahavishnu records. We did John McLaughlin’s music from the first two albums plus a few later compositions, but for the first time with a symphony orchestra! Also featured were guitarist Frank Gambale, saxophonist Ernie Watts, trombonist Marshall Gilkes, trumpeter Guy Barker and bassist Fifi Chayed. A great challenge but it was a load of fun! The orchestra had an open attitude to the music since they had played with many jazz musicans before and they did a great job! The people of Adelaide were warm, the weather even warmer, 38 degrees! We also did a few outdoor gigs at the Womad festival with the septet and I must say, it was a little hard to concentrate on the music in that heat. But all in all, a very pleasant experience!
