CLINICS update 2011

Teaching Jazz music is something I do at the Sibelius-Academy all year around. I find it very challenging and illuminating to work with the wonderful students that i've had the pleasure to have guided through the years. It's naturally also very nice to meet fresh faces around the world and that's why I'm always interested in new possibilities to share my experiences in music...

Did the Imatra clinic again two years in a row (2010-2011). This year the featured guest was Jiggs Whigham, last year Mike Abene. My former student trombonist Antti Rissanen puts together the clinic now. Had fun!

In July 2008 for the second year in a row, I took part in a jazz camp on the beautiful island of Corfu, Greece. Arranged by saxophonist Dimos Dimitriadis of the Ionian University, that year's clinic also featured my dear old friend bassist Ron McClure, new friends saxophonist Chico Freeman and guitarist Richard Smith to name a few. The school where we teach is located at the old fortress in the city of Corfu and the scenery is just fantastic! Weather can be exhausting (36-38 degrees!) but this summer was a little more reasonable (around 30). Dimos does a great job and the food is delicious! If you are a prospect student, think seriously about attending. It is an informative and intense week of jazz music! In the summer of 2009 I was there again with Dimos and a dear friend pianist Giorgos Kontrafouris and singer JD Walter.

In July 2009 (June 28th-July 5th) I taught and performed with old friends, guitarist Harri Ihanus and bassist Jeff Andrews, at a jazz clinic in Piteå, Sweden. Harri is known for setting up great clinics and I've had the opportunity to work for him with Jerry Bergonzi, Tim Hagans, Wayne Krantz and many others. Of course my friendship with Jeff goes way back to my European tour of 1985 and my second CD in 1987, "Avenida", that he played on. This was especially for fans of the guitar trio!
